What is deep tissue massage ?

Deep tissue massage is a massage therapy technique that aims to stretch and release the various layers of muscle tissue and surrounding fascia. In addition to providing pain relief, this type of massage can improve mobility restrictions resulting from musculoskeletal tension or injury.

Unlike other techniques that involve the hands gliding over the skin, deep tissue massage works on the muscle by gripping and stretching it, providing a more holistic effect on the tissue.

What are the benefits of deep tissue massage ?

Because of its many benefits, deep tissue massage is popular with athletes and physically active people in particular. Although the effects of massage are primarily physiological, it is recognized that it has a relaxing impact on the body as well as the mind.

The following are some of the benefits of the technique:

  • Release of muscle tension
  • Pain relief
  • Decreased inflammation and improved healing processes in musculoskeletal injuries
  • Relief of stiffness
  • Improved mobility
  • Relaxation

Contraindications

As with other massage therapy techniques, deep tissue massage has some contraindications. For example, it should be avoided if the client has any of the following conditions

  • Open wound
  • Active infection
  • Fever
  • Recent surgery
  • Severe osteoporosis

In addition, due to the depth of the manoeuvres, people with coagulation problems, those undergoing cancer treatment, as well as pregnant women, should discuss with their massage therapist before making an appointment to ensure that this type of massage is adapted to their health condition.

It should be noted that the massage therapist always collects information from the client before beginning the session. This information is used, among other things, to identify any contraindications to deep tissue massage. In doing so, the massage therapist may refer the client to the appropriate medical resource or adjust the treatment accordingly to ensure safety.

Course of the session

A deep tissue massage takes place on a massage table under a sheet. The massage therapist works directly on the skin, without using massage oil. The client may be completely naked or have some clothing on, depending on their comfort level and the area of the body being targeted.

The massage therapist will begin the session by gathering information about the client’s general condition, which will allow him/her to adapt the intervention. To do this, the therapist will have the client fill out a health questionnaire and ask about the location of pain and recent injuries.

Once the person is settled on the massage table, the massage therapist will target the areas of tension and massage them to warm them up. The therapist will then gradually apply slow but deep pressure and manoeuvres in order to loosen the adhesions found between the different layers of muscle tissue and the surrounding fascia. The massage therapist will use thumbs and fingers, as well as forearms, knuckles and elbows.

Throughout the session, the massage therapist will gradually increase the pressure and intensity of the manoeuvres, always respecting the person’s comfort and sensitivity. In this way, the massage therapist will release tension in the tissues, leading to relaxation of the areas worked on and relief of pain.

A deep tissue massage usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the reason for the consultation and the client’s needs. During a session, it is possible to work the whole body or just a specific area.
